A new rapid test for detection of detergent in milk

Technology Details:
A new method has been developed for the detection of detergent in milk. The developed method requires addition of only 400 μl of milk to detecting reagent followed by inverting the tubes 20 times gently. The tube is then kept in upright position and colour of the lower phase is observed. Appearance of purple colour in the lower phase represents pure milk whereas blue colour in the lower phase indicates presence of detergent in milk. The test can also be used for the quantitative estimation of anionic detergent in milk after few modifications. Detects all brands of commercial detergents available in the market. Clear differentiation between pure and adulterated milk sample. The results are available within 100 seconds and it can detect the presence of 20 mg commercial anionic detergent (LABOLENE) in 100 ml of pure milk. No equipment required. No false positive or false negative result. Cost of chemical/plastic ware is Rs. 3.10 per test only. Works with synthetic milk. This qualitative test can be easily performed at milk collection centers. The method has been validated by Punjab Biotechnology Incubator (PBTI), Mohali – a NABL accredited laboratory and Mother Dairy, New Delhi. No interference in presence of Neutralizers, Urea, Starch, Glucose, Common salt, Nitrate salts, Vegetable oil. Applicable in Milk samples preserved (at 4°C) using formalin (o.4%, v/v) can be analyzed up to 30 days.
